The importance of using a medical practitioner for aesthetics
Choosing a clinic to trust for your facial aesthetics needs is difficult. When I first started, there were just a few local practitioners, and all of them were clinicians. Now it seems like there's a whole host of non-medical therapists wanting to step into aesthetics.
The challenge is that once you put a medication into the skin you need a secure understanding of anatomy and pharmacology, which is difficult without baseline medical training.
There are certain contraindications to aesthetics treatments so it’s vital to choose a clinic with medically trained staff who can balance your medical history against risks/benefits of proposed treatments. Botox and dermal fillers have clinical contraindication which range from immune conditions, to blood thinners to antibiotics and many in between.
Ask the difficult questions.....
We do have some excellent medical clinics in this area, so whoever you choose for your aesthetics treatment. You need a doctor, dentist or nurse who are experienced, qualified and fully insured.
Don’t be afraid to ask the difficult questions:
- Is the clinician registered with a medical body- GMC, GDC and NMC are all appropriate
- What experience do they have with different aesthetic treatments?
- Can you see evidence that they follow a professional code of conduct and have appropriate insurances?
- Are they informing you of the risks, benefits, and alternatives of their cosmetic treatments, and what aftercare you can expect?
- Do you feel pressured into the treatment?
